It's been photographed by thousands of people but every photo of the iconic Grain Belt Beer sign has different qualities and has its own unique personality. This one, taken from alongside the Hennepin Avenue bridge in Minneapolis on Nicollet Island captures the ripples in the Mississippi River and the trees on the banks awash in vibrant autumn color.

Apollo Liquors & Superette - Austin, MN

Austin, MN; no, the "Liquors" part of the sign is not out. The lighting of the sign alternates between "Liquors" and "Superette". And strangely enough, having lived in/around Austin, MN for 20 years, I never once entered the liquor store side of Apollo.

While it wasn't the sunniest day when this photo of Papa Burger in front of the A&W restaurant in Faribault, MN was taken, it is a great photo in that it showcases both an iconic piece of Americana (the historic A&W restaurant in Faribault with drive-up dining) and the restaurant's human mascot - Papa Burger holding the staple frosty root beer mug.

Marshall Hotel sign - Marshall, MN

Where have all of the cool signs - like this one for the Marshall Hotel in Marshall, Minnesota - gone? This neon on aluminum hotel sign looks like it has beckoned weary travelers since maybe the 1940s (or before) and is in remarkably good condition unlike the actual Marshall Hotel which has been vacant for years.

On a side note you have to check out the photographer's blog. Having spent thousands of miles on a trip capturing unique and historic signage and roadside scenes from a bygone era you should probably leave a comment of appreciation for the hard work of this photographer.

It's apparently the end of an era. The Cottage View Drive-In in Cottage Grove, MN may very well be moving on as retailer Walmart is interested in building a mega-store on the home of a dying breed - the drive-in movie theater. I've never been to one but maybe I should add it to my bucket list.
