While April is typically the dawn of spring in Minnesota, 2014 brought more snow as our extended winter dragged on. This photo, as the photographer explained, shows a CP as well as a DM&E locomotive pulling their load at restricted speeds through the heavy falling snow toward Loretto, MN. Normally I would be drawn to beautiful scenery but sometime the weather itself, no matter how depressing it is to some, makes for a truly striking photo.

Best of MinnPics - April 2013
from flickr user orangedot777
April 2013 felt like the winter that wouldn't end. When it snows on April 23rd, that isn't exactly normal and when the snow falls in great quantities -- six inches in this case -- branches and entire trees come down under the weight of the heavy and wet snow. These railroad tracks near Northfield, MN likely remained impassable for at least a few days while the fallen branches and trees were removed.

Last blast of Winter in Minnesota
from flickr user Sue.Ann
Three snowstorms in the month of April will even test the patience of
a true Minnesotan. The mallard is even confused.

Minnesota Twins Opening Day
from flickr user buffaloalice
April in Minnesota -- at least in 2013 -- is not the optimal month for baseball. With chilly temperatures, rain-outs and snow-outs, the Minnesota Twins are drawing less than stellar crowds at Target Field as shown by this photo of a brisk 35 degree opening day game at the downtown Minneapolis stadium.

Entrance to the State Office Building, Capitol Complex, St. Paul,. MN. Normally, I'd say that the trees look very festive when frosted by a covering of freshly-fallen snow but it's April 15th today and this crap is getting old.

April Snow - Northfield, MN
from flickr user orangedot777
Ah, the Winter that wouldn't end continues on April 11 in Northfield, MN as captured on this rural, snow-covered road. Maybe the temperature will reach the 60 degree mark by the time the calendar rolls over to May. I think we can call the first half of April a loss.

12 Days of MinnPics - April 2012
from flickr user Bryan Hansel
Taken April 12, 2012. Northern Lights in northern Minnesota. The bright "star" on
the left at tree level is Venus setting. I am simply enamored by the almost lush green color of the sky. I've never seen Northern Lights this bright before but I'd love to simply to capture a photograph as striking as this one.

Bergman shack
from flickr user Turn to Clear Vision
Maybe it's psychological but even with the warm, golden tones of this photo of a weathered and decaying rural shack it feels cold. It might be because I know it was taken in April or it might be due to the fact that there is virtually no green vegetation present yet. Whatever the case, the subject matter coupled with the composition of the photo make it the best of April 2011.
