Horizontal Snow – Duluth, MN

| Saturday, March 18, 2017

Horizontal Snow
from flickr user Dave Schauer

The photographer says: The wind sock high above Rices Point yard tells the story as light snow is blowing sideways as a CP transfer picks up 50 grain loads for Riverland. Had we received snow instead of rain the previous day it would have been a full blown blizzard. Welcome to March in Minnesota, it must be state high school hockey tournament time.

Best of MinnPics - November 2014

John A. Blatnik bridge at night - Duluth, MN
from flickr user Dan Anderson
November usually brings images of a stark, gray landscape which may or may not be blanketed in snow. Instead, the Best of MinnPics for November 2014 takes us northward to a very cold Duluth, MN on an abnormally cold evening for a look at the gorgeous John A. Blatnik Bridge as it stretches across St. Louis Bay at the beginning of Lake Superior. Whether the stunning stars from the bridge's lights come from post-processing or not, the vibrant blue in the sky and in the structure's steel make for not just a fine photo but a true work of art. I am envious of this capture and it truly deserves the title of the Best of MinnPics for November 2014.

Duluth Minnesota
from flickr user Doug Wallick
Taken an a bitterly cold January evening in Duluth, a full moon hangs low over the famous lift bridge as thin sheets of ice line the foreground of this spectacular nighttime photo of deeply frozen northern Minnesota. The bravery of trudging out into the frigid temperatures of a January evening in Duluth to get "the shot" make this photo stand above the rest and make it the Best of MinnPics for January 2014.

The photographer says: I spent a long weekend in Duluth Minnesota - this is the view under the John A. Blatnik Bridge looking out over the Saint Louis Bay, a tributary of Lake Superior, to Wisconsin. It's been amazingly cold for November - the temp that night was 8 degrees with a 15 below windchill - when you blinked, it made your eyelids stick together.

MV Paul R. Tregurtha arrives in Duluth

| Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Duluth Trip - May 2014 - MV Paul R. Tregurtha arrives in Duluth
from flickr user Pete Markham
The photographer says: My wife and I were in Duluth celebrating our 3rd wedding anniversary this past weekend. We went to visit Enger Tower at the top of the hill in Duluth where you have a breathtaking view of the Duluth-Superior Harbor. While we were there, we watch the MV Paul R. Tregurtha plow through the late season ice and come through the Duluth Ship Canal. I’d never watched a ship come in from this high vantage point. Very cool!

The Tregurtha is currently the “Queen of the Lakes”, meaning she is the largest vessel currently in operation on the Great Lakes. She was completed in 1981 and is 1013 feet and 6 inches long. She was in Duluth to refuel and pick up a load of coal from the Midwest Energy terminal.
