Almost to Duluth MN
from flickr user Sean Jones
A recent evening in November made for a spectacular sunset near Duluth, MN. With the prolonged warm weather in Minnesota, a plethora of amazing photos and striking scenes were found thought the first half of November.

Full Color Sun Dogs - Freeborn, MN

Full Color Sun Dogs
from flickr user Darcy
The first true cold snap of the winter season in Minnesota has produced a handful of sun dog sightings but none that I have seen are as striking as this one taken near the small southern Minnesota community of Freeborn. Check out the spectrum of vibrant colors – truly a striking image.

December Sky (Explored)
from flickr user Benjamin Sullivan
As the sun sets on a December afternoon, approaching clouds are lit brilliantly with yellows, oranges and pinks; turning the fresh coating of snow somewhat blue.

Summer sunset- EXPLORED!

As summer begins to draw to a close, a striking sunset like this one over one of Minnesota's 10,000+ lakes reminds us to take a break and enjoy the beauty that is all around us.

Sun-drenched hay bales - Alexandria, MN

Hay Bales in Sun Shadows
from flickr user YT Blue
With a backdrop of a couple small runways, these round hay bales in Alexandria, MN seem rather surreal as the low summer sun drenches the entire landscape in a warm, golden glow.

One small issue I have with this photo, though, is some apparent doctoring of the sky with the selection artifacts along the tree line in the background being a dead giveaway that some processing has taken place.

Downtown Minneapolis panorama

Minneapolis Panorama
from flickr user Megan Johnston
The one thing that stands out most to me about this pink-hued early evening panorama of downtown Minneapolis -- taken from the banks of the Mississippi River -- are the number of construction cranes visible. With office towers, apartment building and the new Vikings stadium filling in pieces of the ever-changing skyline, Minneapolis is definitely on the grow.

After Sunday afternoon's storms rolled across Minnesota, a spectacular sunset was left behind as evidenced by this photo of a silhouetted deer near Albert Lea, MN.

March sunset - Merriam, Minnesota

Midnight Sun
from flickr user LP_lpres
Sunsets happen every damn day. It's just that some days have better looking sunsets than others. This one, captured during our abnormally warm March weather near Merriam, Minnesota brought its A-game. Vibrant oranges. A few clouds for texture. Silhouetted trees. Hell yeah, this one's a winner.

Best of MinnPics - June 2014

Minnesota Spring
from flickr user Ernie Vater
A field of wild Lupine on a warm spring night in Minnesota set aglow by the setting sun. A sure sign that summer is upon us. I took far too much time making the difficult decision of the best of MinnPics for June 2014 but a field full of lavender flowers illuminated by the perfect sunset makes the time spent much more worth it.

Minneapolis Aglow
from flickr user Bob Israel
With the sun setting along the banks of the Mississippi River after the leaves have fallen to the ground across Minnesota, Minneapolis has become dependent on structures like the beautifully illuminated Lowry Bridge with the backdrop of an almost painted sunset reflected on the calm and cool waters of our landmark river.

A foggy blue sunset settles in over one of the many lakes in Minneapolis as a group of sailboats sit in the water waiting for their last hurrah around the lake before winter sets in.

Blue hour - Minneapolis skyline

Dusk / Blue Hour - Downtown Minneapolis Skyline
from flickr user m01229
Friday, when this photo was taken, was the first in a string of rather unusual 80-plus degree days. That would be spectacular weather for June but this is the end of September -- in Minnesota. We know it never lasts this time of year but the scenery, as shown in this photo of the Minneapolis skyline during the striking blue hour, is spectacular. Even with cooler weather upon us, get out and enjoy the sights because the temperatures only continue to get cooler for the next few months.
