March sunset - Merriam, Minnesota

Sunsets happen every damn day. It's just that some days have better looking sunsets than others. This one, captured during our abnormally warm March weather near Merriam, Minnesota brought its A-game. Vibrant oranges. A few clouds for texture. Silhouetted trees. Hell yeah, this one's a winner.

A classic view of Split Rock Lighthouse along Minnesota's North Shore -- with a little twist. On this beautiful March day, the ice on Lake Superior was melting and clearing out, but just enough was left to be beautiful and blue in this shot. (As it turns out, a month later, the ice in Superior harbor still hadn't cleared out!) While most people use this particular vantage point along Lake Superior to capture the majestic Split Rock Lighthouse, the photographer instead used the lighthouse as a distant background and focused on the action in the waters of Lake Superior. Well done and quite the gem for the Best of MinnPics 2014 - March!

Best of MinnPics - March 2013

The truly magnificent colors come out to play at sunrise. This photo of plates of ice near the shore of Lake Superior shows the contract of seasons that march in Minnesota often is. While winter drug on into May throughout parts of the state, March showed us glimpses of Spring as well as stunning colors which often times go overlooked during the sometimes bleakness of winter.

12 Days of MinnPics - March 2012

Taken on March 21, 2012, this low-to-the-ground photo of Rice's Point in Duluth, MN shows that even though winter was long gone in the southern part of the state, northern Minnesota still experienced foggy days as the ice on Lake Superior broke up. I can believe that during my travels to Duluth that I have missed this true gem of the lakefront. An amazing subject -- on that I hadn't heard of until today -- and fact that the photographer used the perspective technique quite well makes it worthy of being the Best of MinnPics for March 2012.
