A wintry scene near St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis earns the title of Best of MinnPics 2014 for February. Capturing the sometimes overlooked beauty of our long winters in Minnesota, the photographer was in the right place after what appears to be a light snowfall which left the tree branches coated in a light frosting of snow and the meandering strip of nearly black water contrasts so vividly with the crisp and clean snow that it's hard to believe such serenity exists within the boundaries of Minneapolis.

Minnemishinona Falls - North Mankato, MN

Located just west of North Mankato, MN in a small Nicollet County park off of Nicollet County Road 41 sits the magnificent and elusive Minnemishiona Falls. Plunging a whopping 41 feet, the stream is found to be dry during many of our warmer and/or drier months but when the water is running it is quite the site to see.

Pigeon River Falls

The photographer says: Pigeon River falls from almost 120’ high cliff creating the highest falls in MN State. It used to play pivotal role in lumbering business between Canada and The US in early 1900s. The river dives US and Canadian border - right side is Canada and left side is USA. This falls and the river stream together, was the natural means of transportation of wooden logs from Canada to The US side of Lake Superior. This is now history, but it maintains critical ecological balance of the region and attracts visitors to The Grand Portage State Park for its breathtaking beauty.

12 Days of MinnPics - June 2012

Taken June 20, 2012, this long exposure photo of Gooseberry Falls along Minnesota's north shore of Lake Superior captures the extreme flooding the Duluth region suffered due to extremely heavy rainfall across much of the area. Although the area has recovered, much of the damage to streams and rivers will last for the forseeable future. I chose this photo because, to me, the flooding from June along the north shore stuck out as the most memorable event for much of the summer. The photo itself is striking because the photographer managed to find artistic value amongst a very destructive event.

New Waterfall on Mesaba Ave. - Duluth Flooding

With the course of some streams in the Duluth area and the northland region changed forever, this photo of a newly formed waterfall (hopefully only temporary) pouring down on to a sidewalk alongside Mesaba Ave. in Duluth truly shows the destructive nature and raw power that last week's historic rainfall unleashed in the Duluth area and along the north shore of Lake Superior.
