A fog bank rolls across the vastness of Lake Superior. Expect this phenomenon to occur more frequently this summer as the lake's waters are cooler than normal due to last winter's extreme cold. At least this fairly innocent weather occurrence makes for a very cool photo.

A foggy February morning leaves wires, fence posts and trees in what appears to be a pasture covered with hoar frost. While many only think of February as being the shortest month and home to Valentine's Day, it is also -- in my experience -- home to plenty of mornings where the landscape is painted with hoar frost. I spent far too long trying to single out a best photo for February but as I narrowed down the choices the calming nature and simplicity of this one helped it rise to the top.

Marquette Harbor Lighthouse

The lighthouse was constructed in 1866 and a second story added in 1909. The lighthouse is the oldest significant structure in the city and more importantly, the lighthouse is one of the most historic navigation beacons on Lake Superior and critical to the development of the Great Lakes iron ore trade. Until the opening of the major Minnesota mines in the 1890s, Marquette was the premier shipping port for iron ore on the Great Lakes and this Marquette beacon was vital for the safe navigation of ships entering Marquette.
