The dizzying lights of the Starship 3000 at the Minnesota State Fair explode in a kaleidoscope of blues and greens.

Lightsicle at the minnesota state fair
from flickr user chuck olsen
Dubbed by the photographer as "The Lightsicle", this photo of a towering ride at the Minnesota State Fair midway is my favorite of the bunch.

What did the state fair look like decades ago? Check out these historical state fair photos.

Light Scrambler at the minnesota state fair

The cars of The Scrambler spin and whir around their metal base leaving riders on this Minnesota State Fair midway ride asking for more, probably.

Merry Go Round at the minnesota state fair
from flickr user chuck olsen
There is nothing more iconic in the way of fair rides than the simplistic Merry Go-Round. Its horses prancing up and down and lights blinking, this timeless classic is a landmark of the Minnesota State Fair midway.

MSP - Night Flights
from flickr user NVJ
A long exposure photo of a few flights departing from Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport. As the photographer stated, a few additional flights would have made for a more interesting photo but to me this is still a perfect use for long exposure photography.

Best of MinnPics - November 2013

The Start of Winter Skies from flickr user Megan C Johnston
The hidden colors of the city at night fly off the screen in this long exposure photo of Minneapolis. The smoothed out motion of the Mississippi River coupled with blurred and long trailing smoke and steam from stacks alongside the river make for an almost mythical in appearance cityscape.

Best of MinnPics - July 2013

nighttime long exposure photo of Minneapolis from construction site crane
from flickr user _deekayeL
Summer nights are truly the best of the year. They begin later and they are shorter which means the amount of fun created per hour is higher than at other times of the year. That, apparently, is how this particular photographer who scaled this Minneapolis-area construction site lives. After proceeding to the top of the construction site, the photographer stuck around long enough to capture a unique perspective of the city via a long exposure and make the cut for best photo of July 2013.

Kost Dam Star Trails

Kost Dam Star Trails
from flickr user LoneStarNorth
The photographer says: On a cold Fall night in Minnesota, Me & Kent Carder decided to head out to capture some star trails on a beautifully lit sky at a local landmark along the Sunrise River in Chisago County. The moon was near Full and completely illuminated the landscape as far as the eye could see. There was no need to light paint the image. Life is great when you get to go out and do the things you love to do!!

Minnesota State Fair midway at night
from flickr user IPvisuals.com
Taken August 29, 2012, this photo of midway rides at the Minnesota State Fair is just amazing due to the subject. I, for one, like fairs of any size and the Minnesota State Fair is a photographer's dream. With millions of people attending the ten day event, there is something for a photographer of any skill level to capture and the nighttime photography is what really works for me. The bright lights of the midway are a money pit for those who enter to be entertained but the bright lights as seen through the camera's lens make for stunning works of art like my choice for best photo of August, 2012.

Abandoned Ford - Bygland, MN
from flickr user Cubcake Photography
An abandoned Ford truck sits alongside a likely unused Butler grain bin near Bygland, MN. The photographer captured this scene using a 10 minute exposure which also allowed for the capture of light trails as the stars moved across the sky.

An amazing long exposure capture of the action along St. Paul's Mississippi River frontage with a few barges waiting for a tow along the banks of the mighty Mississippi.
